Baby, it's cold outside!

We're having near record cold here in Minnesota over the past few days. School was closed for Katie today. We woke up to a temp of about -20 with wind chills hitting almost -40. Brrrrr!

We did take advantage of the cold air by doing a couple of experiments for school today. Isaac decided he wanted to make an ice ball so yesterday afternoon we filled a balloon with water and he stuck it out on the porch. We monitored it's progress during the evening and today he cut off the balloon and found a perfectly smooth ice ball.

We also found an experiment for making snow. We tried that this afternoon and all kids thought it was awesome! Well, Sam didn't really care but he's hard to impress. It didn't translate well into a picture but it was still fun.

I've always wanted to try experiments with the cold temps, but I almost always forget when its cold to do them! We're usually sitting inside complaining about it being cold....

Looks like they turned out neat though! Way to go!
